Yahoo! Finance is launching a new cultural asset index that is called The Total Collectables Index, which tracks the value of a basket of goods including comic books, trading cards, and sports memorabilia. This group of collectibles also includes cars, securitized NFTs, wine & spirits, and more. The index was created in partnership with Pricing Culture, and is self-defined as "the best gauge of the fractionalized collectables market of SEC registered cultural assets."
The data sources also come from alternative asset and fractionalization investment platforms like Otis and Rally. Since this is a new industry, we expect that the methodology, data sources, and range of collectible categories to evolve. And while Yahoo! Finance has created one of the first indices, there will surely be more indices and variations to come from other companies.
More importantly, you can tell that collectibles are being taken more seriously as an asset class when a company like Yahoo! Finance creates an index to track them. Whether to diversify your investment portfolio, to track assets more closely related to culture, or to find new ways to pursue your personal passions, there are many reasons why people are having an increasing interest in collectibles.
