French sports equipment and clothing manufacturer Salomon, has partnered with Maison Margiela’s diffusion line MM6 to “create a shoe that could easily transition between cityscapes and the great outdoors”
Salomon is well known for their hiking-ready durable shoes whereas Maison Margiela is known for their haute couture collections that include both artisanal and ready to wear fashion. The two coming together is a marriage of crafts, with Salomon bringing great high footwear that delivers on performance and MM6 bringing in the design to usher a new era in trendy footwear.
The collection first appeared at MM6's AW 2022 show at the beginning of the year but the concept was taken a step further at the SS 2023 show where for the first time we saw the Cross High and Low. These sneakers are presented in strong opposing palettes such as black and white while the low top also comes in a multicolor palette of tan, green, gray and blue. While the shoe has been pitched as both for cities and the great outdoors, we can expect that more people wearing trendy sneakers will be seen in urban areas.
This collection will be available online from November 11. In the fast growing world of streetwear and luxury label collaborations, it is interesting to keep track of how brands are finding their niches and the dance with demand for such partnerships. Particularly for a brand like Salomon, which does not have the cultural cache of Nike or Adidas, they need to stand out in terms of their brand collaborations.
