Manchester United is one of the most well-known soccer clubs in the world and has announced their first ever digital collectible project as they make advances into the Web3 space.
The project will kick off with a gift of NFTs to their loyal fans, powered by the Tezos blockchain. The club will launch a Web3 community whose sole aim will be to educate, reward and unite their global fan base. They are planning to do this through a number of easy tutorials that will be hosted by players from both the Men’s and the Women’s team, who will educate the fans and help them to understand Web3 and how NFTs work. The whole experience is meant to unlock new experiences for the fans and foster more engagement with the club and the players. Right now, the NFTs function as digital collectibles but this could likely change in the future as Manchester United expands this program.
They also want to involve the fans in the process of designing future collectibles that take inspiration from the club's history. The first of these drops has been priced at £30 and 20% of its proceeds will go to Manchester United Foundation. It’s very interesting to see all the creative ways in which sport teams use Web3 to maximize fan engagement.
