A few weeks ago, Disney released the first set of its new trading card game Disney Lorcana and now they are already being resold on eBay for over $2,000. The hype is so quick and real – the rules of the game haven’t even been released yet but people are already speculating and buying cards with the expectation of prices going up.
Disney’s success so far with Lorcana is part of a broader trend we have seen recently as trading cards have grown in popularity during and after Covid. High profile purchases by influencers like Logan Paul and Logic have brought particular attention to Pokémon cards, causing their overall interest and prices to skyrocket. We have seen similar trends across sports cards and other trading card franchises like Magic: The Gathering and Yu-Gi-Oh!.
Lorcana is a new trading card game created by Ravensburger that features Disney characters from across all the different franchises that you collect into teams to defeat your opponents. This first release of Lorcana cards came from a special collector’s set given out during the D23 Expo earlier this month. It remains to be seen if Lorcana’s popularity is sustainable, but with the already existing passion for so many Disney franchises, the trading card game should be poised for success. We will have to wait for the official Lorcana launch in 2023 to find out.
