For the biggest footwear brands like Adidas and Nike, being the exclusive sponsor to the world’s biggest sports teams is important. While many athletes have individual deals with different brands, it’s a powerful message for someone to see an entire team dressed up in one particular brand. More often than not, the most popular sports teams usually have deals with either Nike or Adidas. Recently, Adidas announced that they are extending their deal with Arsenal FC to be the team’s kit sponsor.
Arsenal FC are one of the biggest sports teams in the world and are currently ranked at the top of the English Premier League. Adidas was Arsenal’s main kit sponsor for many years from the 80s through to the 90s. Adidas lost the contract to Nike back in 1994, which allowed Nike to capitalize on some of Arsenal’s most successful years, including their undefeated Premier League 2003-2004 season. PUMA became the main sponsor in 2014 until Adidas won back the contract in 2019. With this recent announcement, the deal between Adidas and Arsenal should last until 2030, which also includes the Arsenal women’s team.
The announcement came with the revealing of the new Arsenal kit which includes a home, away, third and pre-game kit. Arsenal is one of the hottest sports properties in the world so Adidas definitely places a huge value on their relationship. Given that the partnership will last for eight long years, we can expect many exclusive collaborations and potentially some new Arsenal-specific footwear. Adidas, like all shoe brands, has been slowly expanding the range of their collaborations so there are surely more soccer collabs on the way.
