Nike Suspends Relationship With NBA Player Kyrie Irving

Nike recently announced the suspension of their partnership with NBA star Kyrie Irving following his antisemitic comments on social media.

This news came shortly after a similar announcement from the Brooklyn Nets that they will be suspending the point guard for at least five games. Nike also confirmed in an interview with CNBC that they will also not be releasing the Nike Kyrie 8, which was supposed to be launched soon. Nike referred to their policies against hate speech and condemning antisemitism as the reasons behind their decision.

Irving has since issued an apology to the Jewish community, following this suspension from the Nets and Nike. In his apology that he made over Instagram, he took responsibility and apologized for posting a documentary that contained false information with antisemitic and offensive language to the Jewish community.

At this point it is not clear what the future holds for Irving in regards to his career as well as the Nike partnership. Reports from Nike confirm that the company had no intentions of renewing this partnership beyond 2023, even before this unfortunate event took place. When something like this happens, big companies like Nike are forced to take an ethical stand to show that they do not support the opinions of the celebrities they are partnering with, as was the case with Adidas and Ye just a few weeks ago. As much as taking this action might lose the company money because they have to discontinue a whole product line, in the end it’s always good for the company’s image overall.
